THE ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN EUROPE (GERMANY)

The Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) was founded in 1979 as AMDE (Association of Medical Deans in Europe) to create a forum for Medical Schools and Faculties in the European Community and other European countries to establish contacts and exchange information. The purpose of the Association is to stimulate and develop co-operation between Medical Schools and Faculties in Europe and to develop their relations with other professional, governmental and non-governmental organisations in education, academic management, medical research and health care. For the purpose of AMSE, „Medical Schools” and „Medical Faculties” and “Medical Universities” are considered to be equivalent. For the purposes of the Association Europe is defined as the World Health Organization European Region.

AMSE is primarily concerned with the leadership and management of medical schools, and the question of how to run the medical school, and how to manage its relationship with the university hospital and other health-care partners. AMSE is also interested in the regulatory, quality assurance, political and economic contexts in which the medical school works to fulfil its mission of medical education and medical research.

AMSE organises regular conferences (up to now about 20) on topics of particular interest to deans, heads of school and other staff members of Faculties of Medicine as well as of quality assurance and quality improvement in higher education. One of the regular conference is „Challenges of doctor mobility in a changing Europe – Standards and recognition for patient safety”

AMSE is also the inititor of AMSE Quality Assurance and the organizer of a meeting „Quality assurance” that was held in Berlin in 2016. In the meeting took part more than 30 representatives from European accreditation institutions/bodies and medical schools. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity for a broader discussion of the AMSE initiative to implement a uniform quality standard in Europe for medical schools and affiliated teaching hospitals, their education programmes and the verification by recognised quality assurance agencies. The meeting closed with the attendees’ expression to support the initiative on a Europe-wide, standardised quality assurance procedure for undergraduate medical education and that this should be persuaded further under the leadership of AMSE.

Aditionally AMSE is an active member of the European Alliance for Subject-Specific and Professional Accreditation & Quality Assurance (EASPA) that is non-profit association seeking to provide a platform for the cooperation between the European and international quality assurance networks and international organisations in the development and harmonisation of their activities in the field of quality assurance and quality improvement in higher education. In this context, AMSE takes part in collaborative forum for the community of disciplinary, field specific European networks of quality assurance that assess the quality of study programs, schools or professional individuals.

AMSE has been also a partner with WFME and ORPHEUS (the Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System) in developing publication “Best Practices for PhD training” (2016) that is based on the ORPHEUS – AMSE – WFME standards for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in Europe.

AMSE regularly takes part in many conferences and symposia concerning medical education and challenges. In last two years AMSE took part inter alia at: • Annual Academic Conference “Crossing Boundaries: Assessment in Medical Education” of the European Board of Medical Assessors (EBMA), UK • Kickoff Meeting with European Accreditation Agencies at AQ Austria • Annual Conference of Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), Spain • 77th Annual Conference of the German Association of Medical Faculties, Germany • Transnational Education Symposium: Globalisation and Transnational Education and Curriculum Implementation hosted by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland • The Research & Innovations for Health Professions Conference hosted by IGHPE, Italy • World Health Summit Forum, Switzerland • ORPHEUS conference »Lost in Translation«, Germany AMSE was an organizer of a symposium under the title „Health care delivery is changing rapidly. How can medical schools respond to ensure graduates are fit for the future?” that took place on 28th August 2017 in Helsinki.
